![]() ![]() ![]() I’d give you her name, but I never cared to ask her for it. Much to my chagrin, she never found them amusing. At which point, she would half-heartily listen to me go on and on about the latest dick joke I’d written. She would tell me about the shows she watched the previous evening and often times complained about not having A/C, which I found odd, because who drives a $45k car but can’t afford an air conditioner? I’d stare at her cleavage through the periphery of my stunning blue eyes and pretend to be invested in her concerns until she would ask me about my night. The two of us were friendly and we would partake in nonsensical banter while waiting on the platform for the 6:53am train. Within a couple of months, I noticed this babe who drove an expensive white Lexus skipping the parking meter. I live closer to New Haven, but for $8 less I gladly drove ten minutes further each morning. That shit adds up quickly and I’m an admitted cheapskate, so I did some investigating and found out parking at West Haven cost $6. At first, I’d go to Union Station in New Haven, but daily parking in the garage there is $14. I wasted a couple years of my prime commuting daily from West Haven to Grand Central. I’ve known about this open secret and have been taking advantage of it for years. *Editor’s Note: Often times I write in a satirical manner and am loosey goosey with facts in an attempt to make you slugs laugh. How can I be expected to partake in the honor system when I have no honor to speak of? Quick shout out to for the good reporting. I thought by now it would be,” said West Haven commuter Mindy Chambrelli. “The fact that it’s not being enforced is annoying. “We’ve been told to expect something by April 1st,” said Andreski. So, when will those first tickets be handed out? Not for a while. He said as long as permit holders arrive before 10:00 in the morning, spots should be and have been open. So, is it fair that the DOT is accepting $600 a year for people to have a spot there when they’re not guaranteed a spot?”Īndreski said, “Well, in all cases we don’t guarantee parking right? There’s not a guarantee of parking there without exception.” News 8’s Stephanie Simoni said, “But that’s not happening and it’s been almost a year with this issue. ![]() “We believe once we start issuing fines for non-payment we will see this issue go away,” said Andreski. The DOT estimates that every day 200 people fail to do the right thing which means the state loses about $1,200 dollars a day. Right now, it’s all based on the honor system.Īndreski said, “Just because you can’t get a fine doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be doing the right thing and paying a fee.” News 8’s Stephanie Simoni asked, “There’s nothing DOT can do to speed up the process? You’re losing money everyday?”Īndreski said, “Yeah, we’re aware of that, we’re keenly aware of that and we’re not satisfied with it at all.” Now, it’s in the hands of the Central Infractions Bureau. Then, they waited on the Department of Admistrative Services. It took the legislature three years to give them the authority. He says they can’t enforce anything just yet. “We’ve noticed an uptick of people not paying their fees,” said DOT’s Bureau Chief of Public Transportation Richard Andreski. “I’ve had many conversations with DOT about selling those permits when we know we weren’t able to enforce those parking rules. West Haven State Representative Dorinda Borer (D) has heard the complaints loud and clear from her commuting constituents. “It is annoying ’cause I pay to park here everyday and it’s not fair that other people don’t,” said paying permit holder Kari Cunningham. “I park and I always feel guilty about not paying, but apparently nobody cares.” “I’m here an hour and a half early just so I could get a space and even then it’s not even a legal space.”Ī parking permit costs $600 per year, but every day hundreds don’t pay a dime and get away with it like “Freeloading Commuter”. We caught West Haven resident Liz Hawley inventing a space and she didn’t have any qualms about talking with us on-camera. The police station is a few blocks away from the train station parking lot, but they’re powerless because it’s up the to the DOT to enforce the rules, and it’s not being done. That adds up to more than $8,000 a week taxpayers are losing. (WTNH) – The Department of Transportation estimates around 200 people illegally park at the West Haven train station each day. ![]()
